![]() That was a primary concern expressed at a previous meeting with the county commissioners by New Castle Town Manager David Reynolds.Ī separate contractor also was able to fix the campground’s water system, and the water is now being chlorinated again, de Moraes said. Documents also state that there is to be a 60-day limit for camping, although neighbors and some previous campers have said that hasn’t been enforced for several years.Ī private engineers’ inspection determined that the campground’s septic system is not seeping into the town of New Castle’s Elk Creek water supply, de Moraes said. They have been advised that they will need to relocate as soon as it’s possible, de Moraes said.Ĭounty permits allow only seasonal camping in the 67-space Elk Creek Campground between May 1 and Nov. ![]() Sean de Moraes, who was appointed the receiver in the foreclosure action against campground owner Beau Haines, told the commissioners on Monday that four campers remain on site because they are frozen in and can’t move until the snow and ice melts. “They were taken advantage of,” Samson said. We'll definitely be back.Samson even suggested finding a way to use some of that money to reimburse campground tenants who paid rent for their camper or RV space in advance, and then were told they had to leave before the winter was up. But I'd expect you're prepared if you're out tent camping in Colorado. They pretty much back right up to wilderness. If you're terrified of animals, don't camp in 42-46. And everything was closed one evening, but I saw her walking out of the bathroom and she opened up real quick so I could get some more firewood (ours got soaked). They didn't have the size batteries we needed, and she grabbed some for us when she went into town. That being said, they'll go out of their way to help you. So, if you need batteries or something, don't count on them being open. The only thing I would say to be aware of is that their hours vary. And when we checked in the lady was so sweet. When I made a reservation over the phone, the guy I talked to was friendly and informative. My husband said he didn't hot water, but I sure did. The bathrooms aren't anything fancy, but they're clean and that's what counts. The walk to the dumpster was short, as was the walk to the bathrooms. There was also a wood burning grill and a fire ring and two picnic tables, although most just have one. There was an electrical hook up and a water spigot on our site. But when it rained all day one day, I was grateful for it. The ground was gravel, which initially was concerning to me (I'm used to dirt or grass). Ours had two "sections" a raised area where we put the tent and then our fire ring/grill/tables were creek-level. ![]() Most of the sites are raised a little bit off from the creek. But there was less separation between sites on the RV side, which makes sense. Something I did notice was that we had a lot of privacy provided by the trees on the tent-side of the campground. We had three other tent campers in addition the next night. Our first night there, it was just us and the trailer on our side of the creek for the night. Although there was a trailer hooked up with the side for tents and a tent next to RVs. There are two sides to the campground - generally one with cabins and for RVs and one for tents (sites 43-67). The river was crystal clear - loved listening to it babble at night. We stayed here two nights in a tent and had a fantastic experience (minus the rain, which was out of their control). I do recommend this campground for anyone that wants a secluded campsite. There wasn't much of a breeze during our stay, so battery powered fans in the tent made up for that. The campsite is 2 or 3 estimated miles from I-70. There, they handled our reservation and payment. They have a little store with drinks, ice cream, and other items that opens at specific times of the day, 7 days a week. Our site was removed from all the rest (which was good), but just barely enough room to walk by the tents without stumbling into the water. Next time I'll ask for one of the larger sites near the river. Yeah, they put us right next to the river. We had reservations for 4 people, each with small tents. Chose Elk Creek for our 4th of July stay. I searched the Glenwood Springs area for a suitable campground with showers and found one that had poor reviews (just outside Glenwood Springs) and Elk Creek Campground.
